That's me eating a peanut butter cookie, in a gym. It's on brand, I promise.
One thing I've watched since we started in 2014: the routine that sticks is the one that bends. The people who stay healthy year after year aren't rigid about it. They have a structure that leaves room — for a cookie, for a Friday night out, for a week that goes sideways.
A few ways our regulars make theirs bend without breaking:
- Order the same night every week. Wednesday, phone in hand, done. Deciding when is most of the work.
- Know the nights you'll be out and order around them. Four meals is still a week on track.
- Put the boring meals on autopilot. A workday lunch shouldn't need a decision.
- If a week goes sideways, skip it and order the next one. Skipping isn't quitting.
And yes — enjoy the occasional treat. A cookie inside a structured week costs you nothing. I wrote last week about randomness being the thing that breaks healthy eating; this is the other half. Structure isn't a cage. It's what does the job people keep asking willpower to do — and willpower and discipline are failed solutions on their own. Build the structure, keep the cookie.
